Rush-Mor opened in 1971 and has since become a music institution as Milwaukee’s oldest and longest-running record store. Known for a vast collection of new and used vinyl, the shop has expanded to a large CD assortment and other formats and offerings. A haven for collectors for over half a century.
Owner Dan DuChaine was behind the counter of the Bay View neighborhood shop when I walked in, just like he has since 1994 when he and Bill Rouleau took over the shop. He apologized for the place being a mess, the shop was ransacked by attendees of the Milwakuee Metal Festival just days before my visit, though I still thought the shop looked in order and was still heavily stocked. The tin roof is a lovely touch.
With a general wide variety of genres, including imports from around the world, the shop leans more towards rock’n’roll, punk, hardcore, and heavy metal. Rush Mor Records believes in supporting the local scene and has hosted gallery nights, listening parties, and other events on top of stocking locally created music and offering wall and surface space for handbills and show flyers, most notably running its long-standing music stage at the annual Bay View Bash street festival. The shop has also hosted multiple in-store performances with the likes of The Crosses, Get Rad, Modern Tigers, Call Me Lightning, and Night Again.
Rush Mor is a prime example of a classic record shop with dedicated owners who are more than happy to talk music or help you find your next favorite band. The shop is filled with special variant pressings, new releases, rare gems, and enough titles to keep a cratedigger busy for hours.
